Student Life

Freshman Senate

All freshmen at Leonia High School were officially able to nominate themselves for student council during this September. This was  completely new for the majority of students and competition arose between candidates as they posted different campaigns on social media attempting to gain votes. As they tried to convince their peers to vote for them, the day of voting finally arrived.

Freshmen students were able to vote for the best candidates under each role. They were given from 8:00 am until 11:59 pm to vote for their peers. In a few days, the official members of the Freshmen Student Council were announced.

The freshman class advisor, Miss Agnello, was very excited to meet the new members. She has many plans in store for them and shared a few with us, “The first big event that the Freshmen student council will participate in is the Leonia Holiday Market on December 9th. This event is a fundraiser for the Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior classes. We will have music, vendors, raffles, food and drinks. It will be a community event open to the public. The freshmen will be in charge of selling hot chocolate. In addition to this event, the student council will have bake sales after school throughout the year.”

A few of the new members were asked to share some of their thoughts and future plans with us. Emily Ignacio, the new representative, remarked, “I feel great! I ran against a lot of people and a lot of great competitors, and I’m glad people think highly of me enough to vote me for representative.” Eunice Hwang, the new treasurer shared some recommendations she had for the school: “I do wish our school had more activities and events then such as the addition of 1-2 more school dances and also contests between students for Minga points. I feel like our school should also have a cheer team, since we do not have one that could support our football players. If there are any more suggestions, I will always be open to listen to the opinion of the students. I will try my best to make the school experience of the students be fun and exciting.” The new secretary, Adrienne Kang, let us know what plans she had to positively impact our school, “I will help [to] organize and plan fun activities for the school and make sure that we have a memorable year.”

As the year continues, the Freshman Student Council will host and plan many events. We will continue to see the positive impacts they make on Leonia High School.
