Homework At Leonia High School

In 2026, homework continues to be one of the most debated parts of student life at Leonia High School. Many students have different opinions on whether homework helps or hurts their learning.

To better understand how homework affects students’ day-to-day lives, two Leonia High School students, Jaysen Tomas and Se Chan Kim, were interviewed at LHS about what they think about homework, why it matters to them, and when it impacts their routines both inside and outside of school.

Sophomore Jaysen Tomas shared that he generally feels neutral towards homework: “I feel ok about homework and I understand the concept of it”, he said. But despite understanding its purpose, homework can sometimes cost him valuable free time, “ Sometimes if I get too much homework I miss out on activities I could have been part of”, Jaysen explained. When asked whether homework takes time away from after-school activities, he added, “Yes it does take away time for me to do after-school activities.”

Because of this, Jaysen believes that homework should no longer be assigned. In his words, “Yes, in my opinion homework should stop being given.” For him, the workload can feel more like a barrier than a tool for learning.

Another student, Sechan Kim, had a different perspective. Sechan explained that homework depends on the class, “What I think about homework is sometimes I have classes where homework just isn’t necessary but I have some classes where it is useful.” While homework can interrupt his personal life, for example, time with family, he still sees its academic benefits, “Homework takes away time from me doing other things but it does help me study.”, he said.

For Sechan, after school activities also clash with assignment time, “Yes homework does infer with my after school activities because I have after school sports so sometimes it takes me till late at night to complete my homework.”, he explained, Despite these challenges, Sechan does not think homework should stop altogether. He believes it still plays an important role in learning, “I would say no to getting rid of homework because homework helps us learn.” Sechan said.

Homework can help students review class material, practice skills, and better prepare for tests and quizzes. It can also reinforce what is taught in class and help students build responsibility. However, the disadvantages are becoming much harder to ignore. Many students feel that assignments take away valuable personal time, limit family interaction, and interfere with after school activities they care about. For some, homework adds unnecessary pressure to already busy student schedules. Although homework may support learning in certain situations, these interviews show it often creates more stress than benefits. As students try to balance school and life, the growing concern is whether homework is truly helping students or just holding them back.
