Diving Into a New Season

This year, the Lady Lions are back and looking to one-up their season from last year. For the 2016-2017 season the Girls’ Swim Team ended with an 11-1 record and won the League Meet for the third consecutive year. The most memorable event, however, was how far the Girls’ team went into the State Tournament. Considering the small team that is Leonia/Palisades Park, the girls team went into the tournament holding their heads high and hoping to shake things up. Leonia completely took their opponent, Kittatinny, by surprise winning the meet in a close race of 95 to 75 and continuing on to the second round of States against Demarest. Unfortunately the Lady Lions lost and ended their season in the second round of States, still farther than any team has gone before.

This year, the Girls team is looking to come back strong and cause some damage in the State tournament as well as regular season. After graduating pivotal Senior Gabby King, along with others, the team will have some key spots to fill that.

Practices began on November 6th, and the team has been working hard in and out of the pool. December 1st is the first meet of the season and I asked Captain Sydney Keller to comment on how she hopes the season will go, “So far, we’re looking to be stronger this year than last and we will continue to work hard in and out of the pool to improve our record and make this year the best.” Fellow captain, Catalina Castellon says, “I’ve been for training so long and hope I, as well as the team, can achieve the goals we’ve created and have a successful season.”
