Top 5 Most Watched TV Shows of 2017

When it comes to entertainment, the old often becomes the new trend. While many of these shows began years ago, they have reached their new popularity this year, making them the new hype. On our countdown to the top five most watched TV shows of 2017, Riverdale on the CW is the fifth most watched. Based on the Archie comics, the series begins after the death of one of the rich Blossom twins in which a jock, the girl next door, the new girl and the outcast–Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead–unravel the evils bubbling beneath the seemingly innocent town of Riverdale. Riverdale, premiered on January 26, 2017, has averaged 2.3 million viewers by its second season. As more chatter about Riverdale spreads, the show continues to increase its popularity,  averaging, hopefully, more viewers by its third season.

Standing at fourth most watched is the Netflix series, Thirteen-Reasons Why. Though it dropped on March 31, 2017, it was constantly chattered about on social media as it deals with mental health and suicidal issues teens face today. Based upon the novel by Jay Asher, the series starts when Clay Jenson, a quiet high school student, comes home from school one day, finding a mysterious package in the mail. Little does he know that it contains seven tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, a classmate who committed suicide. The series received massive social volume with 11 million tweets and has been viewed by 3.5 million viewers. As viewers patiently wait for season 2, there’s no doubt there will an increase in social volume.

At third most watched, we have the AMC series The Walking Dead which premiered on October 31, 2010. The series is based on the comic book series of “The Walking Dead” by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. As an American post-apocalyptic horror television, The Walking Dead beginning with Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes gets shot and awakens to a zombie apocalypse. He meets a group of walkers in Atlanta and becomes their leader, helping them survive, finds a place to live and get them food. With its eighth season, The Walking Dead averaged 15 million total viewers. Although new rating has been the lowest since season three, you are still sure to find some hype concerning The Walking Dead.

A relatively new netflix series, Stranger Things ranks the second most watched TV show of 2017. Stranger Things starts when Will Byers suddenly goes missing from the town of Hawkins, Indiana, disturbing the peace. Evil government agencies and supernatural forces converge on the town, making the locals realize there is more than meets the eye. With its second season premiering, the show hit its all-time high at 15.8 million views. Hopefully, we can expect more success with its upcoming episodes.

Finally, at top one, Game of Thrones hits the most amount of views. The series is about nine royal families who argue for their control over the lands of Westeros as an endangered race comes back after being dormant for centuries. Despite its age, considering it premiered on April 17, 2011, Game of Thrones reached a high of 16 million views, making it the most watched TV show of 2017. Game of Thrones continues to succeed from its first season which only racked 2.2 million views to season seven. With six more episodes left of the series, Game of Thrones can be expected to reach even higher.

With 2017 coming to an end, the latest shows are ones based on old comics and books or originated years ago. Maybe you should take a blast back into the past too!
