Locker Issues
Students experience problems with their lockers each school year, making it hard to get to class on time or have to decide to share lockers. Many lockers are jammed or broken or people just never learned how to open them, which causes stress for students trying to carry their necessities. This issue affects learning, organization, and how smoothly the school day runs.
For Gianna Mele, a senior at LHS, locker challenges mean sharing space. Many students prefer to store their belongings in lockers that do not lock so they don’t have to struggle between periods. “I have to share my locker, and it’s tough,” she explained, “Sometimes I find there is no space in the lockers for my stuff”. She said that she does have a locker, but it was broken and she never could figure out how to open it. She shares a locker with Genesis Paniagua, also a senior. In her situation, she not only shares the locker but leaves it open.” It saves me time,” she admitted. She explained that she didn’t like fumbling with a lock and having to try and open it in between classes when the hallways are packed. “ This can be a risk because anyone could open it if they know the locker”. Her choice shows how students sometimes would rather deal with security problems than speed and open the lockers.
Meanwhile, senior Eunice Kim has just thrown out the idea of using a locker altogether. “I just carry my things in my backpack and usually a secondary bag like a lunchbox”. She says that it gets heavy sometimes, but she would rather that than deal with the stress of opening and walking to her locker, wasting time during passing periods.
These 3 perspectives show the bigger issue: lockers are supposed to be helpful, but often they cause stress due to inconvenient locations or broken locks. A reliable locker situation could mean less stress, better organization, and better transitions between classes.
