Join the Music Department!
Teens at Leonia High School often convince themselves that they can’t sing—that they have no talent whatsoever. Because of that, they don’t try new things and will never know if, had they tried, the outcome might have been different. But sometimes, it’s not about the talents you have but the talents you will develop. Joining the music department is a great way to discover if you have a talent for playing a musical instrument or singing. It is not only a way to creatively express yourself, but also a way to build bonds with others who share your interests.
People who have come and gone through the music department have found so much joy in doing what they love—whether that be singing in choir or playing in the orchestra or bands. It not only makes them happy to do what they love, but it also gives the teachers a reason to be happy doing what they love when they see others sing or play an instrument with passion and dedication. “It is a community where people with the same interests can interact and share it with each other,” says Evelyn Um (‘25), Senior, Vox Angelica President, Music Academy student, and Violin Performance major for college. This year, the music department has grown in numbers, and because of this, many people have found their true talents.
Most people think that playing a musical instrument or singing isn’t as important as academics. It makes sense that someone might focus more on academics rather than on extracurricular activities. On the other hand, extracurriculars are ways to show a different, well-rounded side of yourself—and they look good on college applications and beyond. “If students are interested, they should get involved with music and be as artful with it as possible. If they are willing to try and learn something from being part of the department, they should join,” says Mr. Penn, Band Director and Music Theory teacher.
There are never enough students in the music department. Anyone with any interest or talent at all should have the opportunity to join and share their gifts. The teachers are always looking for new students and more members to join their ensembles. Hopefully, more current high school students will join next year, as well as any rising freshmen, and get the chance to enjoy playing an instrument or singing. So, to any Leonia High School student who has never found their talent or is looking for a way to be creative with new interests—join the music department!
