This holiday season, get cozy and begin to enjoy the holiday classics everyone knows and loves and even some new ones from the comfort of your own home. Christmas movies are a favorite tradition of many during the holidays, but what makes watching these movies such a staple during the holiday season? Many Christmas movies bring back beloved holiday memories and overall convey a warming sense of love to all. Many favorites such as Elf, The Santa Clause, A Christmas Story, and many more are very nostalgic and simple which makes them easily rewatchable and essential during Christmas time. 

Believe it or not, studies were completed to prove why we really enjoy Christmas movies. Research shows that these feel good comforting movies alter hormone levels in our body, specifically romantic comedy holiday movies. These release more dopamine in the brain which causes us to feel positive emotions, that we often relate to our favorite christmas movies. It has also been proven that watching christmas movies can reduce loneliness and stress due to their warm feelings and nostalgia. 

Hands down the most watched Christmas movie of all time is Home Alone. When asked about their favorite christmas movies, a junior at Leonia High School Liv Meester replies, “I think I’d have to say Home Alone” she adds, “The first one is classic and iconic and the vibes are just beautiful” another junior Sofie Gaevaya says her favorite christmas movie is The Nightmare Before Christmas, “I really love this movie because I am a huge fan of Halloween and love that it integrates into a Christmas movie. I’m also a huge fan of Tim Burton and his creepy style.” A freshman, Grace Widensky says, “The Santa Clause is my favorite christmas movie because I really enjoy watching it every year with my family, it’s almost become a tradition at this point.” 

Christmas movies and their warm, simple, comforting style have become a huge part of the holiday season and always will be. The memories and nostalgia that these movies bring is something that can never be forgotten.
