Spring Sports Wrap Up
As spring sports come to a close at Leonia High School, athletes from various teams are reflecting on the highlights and challenges of their seasons. With tennis matches, volleyball games, and baseball contests against rival schools wrapping up, it’s the perfect time to highlight how these teams grew, competed, and created lasting memories.
Our school’s spring athletes battled not only their opponents but also the changing spring schedule, tough matchups, and moments of pressure that tested their dedication. Still, across every team, one theme stands out: progress—both as people and as players. Tommaso Scordo, a player for the boys’ varsity tennis team, shared how his team evolved as the season progressed. “Since most of our team came back from last year, we already had chemistry going in,” Tommaso said. “But we still pushed each other to improve every day.” By remaining dedicated and encouraging one another to stay focused and improve, their efforts culminated in a county championship, tying with Fair Lawn for first place—the first time in the team’s history in the region. “Winning the county championship was huge because it showed that all our effort and commitment paid off. I am very grateful for my teammates and the opportunity to be surrounded by them every practice and match. We’re like a family.”
For the boys’ volleyball team, communication and consistency were key challenges. Junior Yehsung Jun, one of the team’s players, reflected on the growth that came with staying focused. “Volleyball is a game of timing and trust,” he explained. “We had moments where it felt like things weren’t going our way, but we kept pushing.” He went on to say, “I think the biggest thing we learned was how to trust each other more and play as one unit instead of six people.”
Baseball had its own standout moments. Mark Portrick, a member of the boys’ varsity baseball team, highlighted a specific game that captured the heart of the team’s season. “We had a comeback win against a rival team that nobody expected us to beat,” he said. “The energy that day was insane, and everyone was locked in. That win reminded us why we love the game, and it boosted our overall confidence.” The team’s growth became clear as the season progressed, with wins like their 14-0 blowout against Wallington and an intense 8-7 battle over Saddle Brook standing out as moments that brought the team closer together and proved how far they’d come.
As the final practices wrap up and the uniforms are packed away, Leonia athletes are leaving their seasons with growth, resilience, and bonds that extend beyond their sports. Each team faced its own set of challenges, but everyone ultimately walked off the court or field stronger than when they stepped on.
